Workers' Compensation Benchmarking Study Targets Industry-Wide Operational Challenges

A new study is focusing on challenges to “growth and operational effectiveness” in the workers’ compensation industry. The the 2013 Workers’ Compensation Benchmarking Study is surveying claims leaders through June 2013 and is intended to provide “actionable data” to claims leaders.

The study’s project organizer, Rising Medical Solutions, says it saw a gap in available research about how claims organizations were dealing with daily operational challenges. The new research focuses on specific day-to-day operational issues that claims organizations experience, as opposed to the industry’s overall state of affairs, cost drivers, or jurisdictional comparisons. These include: prioritizing core competencies; measuring best practices; incentivizing operational excellence; training and retaining staff; assessing the impact of technology and data; and evaluating medical management performance.

The survey is open to management-level individuals who oversee workers’ compensation claims operations from insurance carriers, employers, third party administrators, government entities and risk pools. The study report is expected to be published in the fall.
